For many people substance use will lead to problems at home, school, and work leaving them feeling isolated, helpless and ashamed.

    The Problem:
Northwest Arkansas faces the same drug issues as the majority of our country. To start with, alcohol, tobacco and illegal drug abuse have a negative impact on the unborn and young children of our society. Users often develop health issues related to the drug's consumption that tax our local health institutions raising the overall cost for everyone. These substances are also responsible for numerous driving accidents that often cause serious injuries and death to innocent victims. There are about 175 alcohol / drug related fatal and injury car crashes yearly.

    The Numbers:
Approximately 25% of school age kids will be offered illegal drugs, usually by their peers, before they graduate highschool. 10% of students admit to being drunk or high at school. The drugs most often related to Benton County drug abuse cases (in order of most to least) are: Alcohol, Methamphetamine, Marijuana, Amphetamines, all forms of Cocaine. A state average shows that about 50% of the population consume alcohol on a regular basis with about 14% regularly binge drinking, around 30% use tobacco products, over 15% use marijuana, over 12% use inhalants, and over 12% abuse prescription drugs.

    The Solution:
Knowing there is a problem is a big step in the right direction. Knowing that support is essential to addiction recovery is also extremely valuable. Addicts need friends and family that they can depend on for encouragement, comfort and guidance. Knowing when the problem is too big and seeking therapist, counselors, healthcare providers, the faith community and even recovering addicts is very important. Denying the problem and hiding from the truth is always the wrong thing to do. Remember too, that addictions are most often a result from depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, peer pressure and boredom. Current research shows that abuse stems from a choice that can be prevented in many cases simply by education of the resulting ramifications.
